MS Mega Swim Celebrates 20 years at Fitzroy

27 February 2020

MS Mega Swim
The MS Mega Swim brings friends and family together to support a great cause

The MS Mega Swim is one of Australia's most popular and fastest growing fundraising events, bringing friends, families and communities together. A relay event where teams are in the water for 24 hours, participants raise funds for people living with multiple sclerosis.

On average more than 10 people are diagnosed with MS every week. The average age of diagnosis is between 20 and 40 years of age, although symptoms may begin much earlier, and three out of four people living with multiple sclerosis are women. No two cases of multiple sclerosis are identical and the severity and progression of the condition cannot be predicted.

Funky Trunks and Funkita have been proud sponsors of the Mega Swim for over 4 years and have contributed prizes and discounts for funky participants involved.

This year there are a number of Mega Swim events held across the country including a special 20-year anniversary swim this weekend at the Fitzroy Pool in Melbourne. Wollongong is also celebrating 10 years of the Mega Swim.

Best friends Michelle Brookfield and Melissa Roche banded together to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the 25,600 Australians living with multiple sclerosis.

Ms Roche was diagnosed with MS in 2013 and Ms Brookfield was the first person to know that something was wrong. "When the GP told me that I had lesions in my CT scan, I went home stunned. Soon afterwards Michelle turned up to my house with drinks and pizza, and she was with me when I told my parents over the phone, as they live in Victoria," Ms Roche said.

"Melissa was diagnosed six years ago at the age of 32, which has been a real challenge for her to live with," Ms Brookfield continued. Ms Brookfield and her teammates have since raised thousands of dollars for her best mate and other Australians living with MS.

At last year's Hobart MS 24 Hour Mega Swim, Michelle and her team the Hobart Mermaids, raised a total of $5,500, and this year they smashed their goal, raising $8,066 with their renamed team, Hobart Unicorns.

"Our Mega Swim team wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Michelle. It is a very special friendship that we have."

"The support and encouragement from all my friends, family and workmates has been amazing. And this year the support of businesses getting behind our fundraising efforts has blown me away," Ms Roche continued.

"I have MS, but it doesn't have me," Ms Roche added.

Are you with Melissa? Sign up now to an MS 24 Hour Mega Swim event near you. Every lap you swim and every dollar you raise will help someone with MS to live their best life!
