Nationals Gone Virtual - Wrap Up

3 December 2020

Jack

National Short Course Championships has officially, or should we say virtually, come to an end, also concluding our Australia wide swimming competitions for the year of 2020. Whilst the swimmers could only bring the heat to their individual states, performances across the board were, fast, world class and record breaking. Not only did our sponsored Funky Trunks athletes take the competition to "Funky Town" as we call it, but they "virtually" smashed personal best times, titles and Australian rankings in the process.

The young distance duo of Sam Short (QLD) and Noah Kamprad (TAS) gave the big boys a run for their money across the distance events, where they placed 2nd and 5th respectively in the 1500m Freestyle. 15 year old Noah and 17 year old Sam have proven that they are the young guns to watch in the future of Australian swimming. Three of the top five finishers in the 1500m Freestyle were F-Teamers, with Mitchell Tinsley of Chandler finishing in fourth place.

Noah & Sam

Sam also collected a few other podium positions in the 400m Freestyle (3rd) and 800m Freestyle (1st & National Title). Jack McLoughlin and Mitchell Tinsley also had fantastic performances in the Men's 800m, with their 3rd and 5th place swims securing the second Funky top 5 trio of the meet.

A special mention and congratulations goes out to Noah for his 15:12.70 1500m Freestyle swim which places him 3rd on the All Time Australian Short Course Rankings for 15-year olds. And Sam's super quick 800m swim (7:38.97) places him on the 800m Freestyle Top Ten All Time Australian Rankings list as 4th fastest at only 17 years of age.

Jacob & Mitch

USC Spartan and Funky Trunks athlete Jacob Templeton kicked it off for our boys with an incredible meet representing our Multi-Class men. Templeton claimed bronze in the 400m and 200m Freestyle, 200m Individual Medley and 100m Backstroke and gold for the 100m Freestyle. "It was great to get in for a tough weekend of racing these past few days! For the first time in I don't know how many years I did PBs in all (6) events, and to end up with 3 World Records and multi-class podiums was a great bonus!" Triple Paralympian and new dad, Blake Cochrane, also ruled in the pool breaking the current world record by winning the SB7 50m Breaststroke event in a time of 34.45. What a cracking meet our para F-Teamers had at the QLD National champs' venue, showing that they're ready to take on the upcoming trials for Tokyo.

What an outstanding Australian first virtual meet it was for our F-Teamers across the board, where despite the unusual conditions of racing, they, as always, delivered the fastest and funkiest swims of the competition. A massive congratulations to all who swam and keep your eyes peeled for blogs on the up-and-coming state long course championship meets over December!
