Funky Trunks welcomes Sean Niewold to F-Team

28 April 2020

Sean Niewold

Dutch Senior National Record Holder Sean Niewold has taken his place on the Funky Trunks F-Team as one of our newest athletes. At just 18 years of age, Sean has already achieved a lot in his swimming career, becoming National Champion multiple times in just one year. Sean currently swims for WVZ Zoetermeer in the Netherlands and is coached by Shilo Dormehl. We asked Sean a few quick questions to get to know him a little better.

When did you start swimming and why?

I started swimming at the age of six when my family moved to Libya. At the time, swimming was the only sport which was available for the expat community.

What would you regard as the biggest achievement of your career so far?

There are a few things which I am very proud of, such as representing The Netherlands internationally, or becoming National Champion multiple times in one year. However, my biggest achievement has probably been breaking a Dutch National Senior Record with my club's relay team. It was a Senior Record, yet it was broken by a team which consisted of three seventeen year olds and a sixteen year old (me)! The record has already nearly been standing for 2 years!

How long have you been with your current club and coach?

Due to my father's work, our family moved around a lot. This meant I have had the privilege of being able to work with a lot of different coaches, with different styles of coaching. However, I have been with my current coach and club since August 2017, so just over 2.5 years. The last two years are where I have made my biggest improvements, thanks to my incredible coach.

Wishing you all the best with your training Sean and hope to see you back out there in the pool soon.
