Life in the Fast Lane

14 March 2019

Tom Lightfoot
F-Teamer Tom Lightfoot lives life in the fast lane, being a national swimmer and competing in F1 in Schools.

When he's not smashing it out in the pool, Marion Swim Club F-Teamer Tom Lightfoot has been getting involved with his school's team for the F1 in Schools STEM Challenge. This competition is one of the largest Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competitions in the world with participants from over 17,000 schools from over 44 countries. The teams work together to design and build their own small soda charged cars, as well as creating a trade display to help market their project at trade shows.

Tom has been part of his school's team since 2016 and last year his team scored the top prize in Australia which earned them a place at the world finals in Singapore. After two and a half years of working hard on their cars, Tom's team took on 51 other teams and came up on top. Not only was his team crowned F1 in Schools World Champions 2018, they also won the Best Engineered and Fastest Car awards. Their car also became the first to break the 1 second barrier since 2016.

The prizes for the team include full scholarships to City, University of London and UCL Engineering and well as VIP access to the F1 Grand Prix in Singapore which was held just after the competition. Tom and his team have continued to score the VIP treatment since winning F1 in Schools last year having been selected to judge the Australian National Final for F1 in Schools in Melbourne. In addition to the competition, they were also invited attend the official opening of the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix at Parliament House and spend the weekend watching the race from the paddock at the event.

Even though he's been incredibly busy with the competition, Tom has still found time to hop in the pool while in Melbourne! He has been training with fellow F-Teamers Adem Ibrahim and Ashley Weill at the YMCA Northcote Swimming Club, run by Ashley Delaney.

It's great to see our F-Teamers succeeding both in and out of the pool. Great work Tom!
