Litchfield's Break Out Year

21 December 2016

 F-Teamer Max Litchfield

It's safe to say that 2016 was a good year for Max Litchfield. His rap sheet includes fourth at the Olympics, a World Championships silver medal and a British Record.

The 21-year-old forced all eyes to be on him after he won the 400m individual medley at the British Championships in 4:12.05. It was Max's first National title and got him on the plane to Rio - a big goal for him.

"I've always known I wanted to pursue swimming. It was a dream from an early age to make an Olympic Games, but to dream it and to do it are different things. When I started making Junior International teams in 2012, I knew if I put in the hard work then in a few years' time the potential would be there to make the team for Rio," he says.

In the heats at Rio, Max qualified fifth fastest for the final with a time of 4:11.95. He went faster in the final, touching fourth at 4:11.62 - a new PB. For Max, this was his highlight of 2016.

"Fulfilling my career goal and making the Games was fantastic but to go one better, make the final and then finish fourth was surreal! Although fourth is often thought as the worst place to come, I was very proud of my achievements and the thought of that medal in Tokyo 2020 spurs me on," Max says.

After taking a short break, Max got stuck into training at the City of Sheffield with his coach Russ Barber in preparation for the World Short Course Championships in Canada. Max stormed home to claim the silver medal in the 400m IM in a new British Record of 4:00.66. The previous record of 4:01.63 was set by Joe Roebuck in 2009.

Max flew straight home and into his next competition, the ASA National Winter Meet, where he won gold in the 200m and 400m IM and silver in the 200m free.

For Max, the World Short Course Championships was part of his plans to Tokyo 2020. The 2017 World Championships is the next big meet for Max. We're looking forward to seeing what else Max is capable of and we are excited to be supporting him in his journey toward that Olympic medal.
