Records Fall at Irish and Scottish Champs

4 April 2019

Robbie Powell
Robbie Powell is ready for another big year of racing after a successful Irish Opens.

Last week a number of our F-Teamers battled it out at the Irish Open Championships and the Scottish National Age Group Swimming Championships.

The stakes were particularly high at the Irish Open as it was the only opportunity for swimmers to post consideration times for the FINA World Championships taking place in Korea in July. Despite the pressure, our athletes rose to the challenge, breaking records and earning a number of medals.

Brendan Hyland
Fly King Brendan Hyland took down 2 Irish national records at Irish Opens last week.

One of Ireland's big guns, Brendan Hyland, proved himself worthy after winning gold in the 100m Butterfly, 200m Butterfly and 100m IM. In addition to claiming the National Title in the 200m Butterfly for the eighth year running, breaking both the Irish senior and Irish Open Championship records in the process, Brendan also broke the 200m IM record meaning he now has 4 senior national long course records to his name.

Brendan wasn't the only one breaking records at the Irish Open. Fellow F-Teamer Jack McMillan took down the 400m Freestyle national record, which had been in place since 2013, with a time of 3:53.31. Jack also took home two silver medals in the 200m IM and 200m Freestyle.

Freestyle sprinter Robbie Powell managed to score podium finishes in all of his Freestyle events. He came 2nd in the 50m Freestyle and also earned two bronze medals in both the 100m and 200m Freestyle.

Despite coming off of an injury, Sean Scannell managed to win himself a silver medal in the 200m Backstroke and came close to earning a podium spot in his other Backstroke events.

Across the North Channel, Archie Goodburn had a packed schedule at the Scottish Age Champs. Competing in the 17-18 year old category, Archie took home a massive 6 gold medals as well as a bronze in the 200m Breaststroke. With British Champs around the corner, Archie will be training hard to ensure he's firing for the big event.
