Funky Trio take SA Champs

7 October 2020

South Australian State Champs
Travis Mahoney added two SA state titles to his achievements last weekend.

F-Teamers Travis Mahoney, Thomas Lightfoot and James McKechnie took all of the competition to "Funky Town" at the South Australian Short Course Championships over the weekend, achieving a combined 19 gold medals. Needless to say, for the first official SA meet of 2020, they have begun the racing season with outstanding performances, some even in record time.

Travis Mahoney put his eggs in many baskets this meet, competing in the 200 Backstroke and 100 IM on Day 1 to win a gold and a silver. Backing it up with Day 2, he sprinted through the 50 Breaststroke, 100 Freestyle and 50 Backstroke, scoring another silver and two South Australian state titles. The final day for Trav couldn't be faulted as he powered through the 50 Butterly and 100 Backstroke to add another two shiny golds to the final tally of 7 medals for the meet.

South Australian State Champs
Eager to hit the pool, instead of the beach, Tom Lightfoot was glad to be back racing.

Thomas Lightfoot's program was not for the faint-hearted, and his outstanding swims consistently throughout the meet make him one of our Funky distance kings. It would probably be easier listing the events he didn't swim rather than the ones in which he did! On Day 1 he won two SA titles in the 200 Breaststroke and Backstroke and a bronze in the 400 Freestyle. Day 2 added another two golds to the mix for the 200 Butterfly and the 200IM, with an additional bronze in the 800 Freestyle. His day three swims were absolutely killer, swimming in the 1500 and 200 Freestyle events before winning two golds in the 100 Breaststroke and 400IM. A few of us think he might be made of steel...

SA State Champs
Long standing F-Teamer James McKechnie took home 8 gold medals last weekend.

Last but not least, James McKechnie brought the heat to the competition, and left the Champs undefeated. It was go gold or go home for James, scoring gold medals in the 50 Freestyle, 100, 200 & 400IM, 50, 100 & 200 Breaststroke and the 200 Butterfly. Coming away from a state level competition with 8 gold medals is an outstanding effort to say the least.

We are so proud of what the power trio brought to the pool over the weekend and could not be more excited to see their results over the rest of 2020. Keep powering on and stay Funky!
