5 December 2019

Jordyn Cargill
Jordyn Cargill qualified for his first National Championships the year he received the scholarship

We are excited to announce that applications are now open for the Funky Trunks Victorian Country Assistance Scholarship to support the development of talented swimmers in country Victoria. The scholarship's aim is to support the swimmer to attend more meets in Melbourne to gain experience and to continue to improve in preparation for Nationals next year.

As part of the scholarship, Funky Trunks will provide the winner with $500 cash to assist with expenses associated with competitive swimming such as travel, accommodation and competition entry fees to key Victorian or national meets. The winner will also receive $1000 of Funky Trunks products.

Previous winners of the award include Jordyn Cargill from the Traralgon Swimming Club who qualified for his first National Championships in the year that he received the scholarship. He then went on to win the 400m IM at the Australian Age Championships in 2018. We caught up with Jordyn to find out how winning the scholarship has helped with the progression of his swimming career.

What were some of the challenges you found yourself dealing with as a swimmer in regional Victoria?

The biggest challenges I have as a Country swimmer in Traralgon is not being able to train in a 50m pool. We only have 25m pools to train in. We train in three towns, Traralgon, Morwell and Churchill. The only time the pools are available is early mornings from 5.30 am or late at night. Another challenge is the distance for championship events and qualifying for these events can be tricky at local events.

Why did you decide to apply for the Scholarship?

I applied for the scholarship as I love Funky Trunks bathers and wear them to every training session. They are perfect for training with great designs. The APEX racing bathers helped me achieve my State and National qualifying times as well as being able to wear them to swim at championship events. The Scholarship also helped with our accommodation costs for the Victorian State Age Championships held in Melbourne for a week prior to Christmas.

How do you feel that the Scholarship affected the trajectory of your swimming career?

The Scholarship allowed me to perform at my best for championship events as I was well rested being able to stay in Melbourne. It helped me focus on my goals knowing I had the support of the Funky Trunks Team behind me.

Applications close on January 10, 2020 and the winner will be announced at the 2020 Victorian Country Swimming Championships.
