New Ironman on the F-Team

7 September 2018

Brandon Krout
New F-Teamer Brandon Krout is ready to take on Ironman with his Funky Trunks gear!

US Ironman and newly minted Funky Trunks F-Teamer Brandon Krout is looking to make a splash this year after recently achieving pro status. We chatted to him about what got him started on his triathlon journey, how he balances his training and life commitments, and what he's working towards now.

That new Funky Trunks feeling!

When did you get involved with triathlons and what got you interested in racing?

I started racing in 2016 after a few friends and family members suggested I try it out. It's been a steep learning curve because while I had a running background from college, I had zero experience riding or swimming. I didn't even own any of my own equipment besides my shoes so I borrowed everything from a friend. Eventually I tried Olympic distance triathlons and ended up winning my age group and it was down the rabbit hole from there.

What is your biggest achievement to date?

I've been racing in triathlons for less than 3 years so everything has happened quite quickly. Qualifying for and racing in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships was pretty cool as was earning my pro card earlier this year. Achieving pro status in less than 3 years of competing in triathlons without previously clipping into a road bike or swimming laps in a pool was pretty exciting.

What is the next event that you are working towards?

At the end of September I have my pro debut at Ironman 70.3 Augusta.

What are your main triathlon related goals?

I would love to complete an Ironman 70.3 in less than 4 hours. I would also like to move up the pro rankings this year. Starting at the bottom and seeing a big improvement would be a good validation for all my training.

Do you have any pre-race rituals that you swear by?

I had pre-race rituals in high school, but after doing my undergraduate degree in Hawaii I stopped sweating the small stuff. If I had put in the work there was nothing pre-race that was going to change that. As long as I know where the restrooms are beforehand I'm good!

Do you work and study?

I just graduated medical school and I'm currently studying for one of the many US Medical Licensing Exams and working at a family practice medical clinic.

How do you find balancing your training commitments with your study and work?

Early mornings and late nights! I train less hours than the average pro triathlete due to my schedule. I've got certain workouts that I want to hit every week and I schedule them around my work and study. I also do multiple workouts per day with the first at 5am on weekdays and the second around my lunch break. On Saturdays I often start even earlier, around 4am. I've found the key is to be consistent. If nothing else, I'm consistent.

If you didn't do triathlons, what would you do with all your free time?

I'm super competitive and I love sports, so I'd probably be doing ultra-marathons. I'm a big water-skier as well so maybe I'd have a boat.

What's the coolest place you've ever trained or raced?

Anywhere outdoors is awesome! Because of my schedule and where I live, most of my bike rides and swims are indoors, but in summer if I get some time on the weekend to drive out of the city and get a ride on the country roads I'm in heaven.

Tell us a bit about your family.

I met my wife at university where she was a runner as well. She is on an elite Olympic development track team and recently qualified off the US Olympic Trials in the marathon. We've got two awesome young boys ages 5 and 3. Part of my reasoning to go pro was I wanted to be able tell our kids that "mom and dad were pro athletes". Between training, studying, work and our two kids we stay pretty busy. Our kids are excellent race spectators and good workout buddies as well. They'll be in the stroller when we go on runs, they count laps for me at the pool and on Saturday mornings we often wake up at 4:30am to go cheer on mom at a race.

What's your favourite TV show/series/movies?

TV doesn't happen too often, but if it's PBS Masterpiece Theater I'm sold. I'm also a fan of Poldark, The Durrells, Sherlock and Last Chance U.

We're super pumped to have Brandon on board and watch this space for updates on his pro debut at the Ironman 70.3 Augusta!
